Bob is a Senior Electrical Design Engineer with over thirty-five years of design experience. with microcontrollers, peripheral devices, programmable logic, video, high speed (1 GHz+) digital circuit design and layout, analog circuitry, switching power supplies, and EMI containment. He has experience designing products for the medical, military, and commercial markets meeting the appropriate performance and compliance standards for each market.
Experience
- Designed multiple high definition (2K and 4K) displays using Microchip processors, LCOS controllers and panels, and switching power supplies for deployment in the M1A1 and M1A2 Abrams tank and LAV’s (light armored vehicles), Performed timing analysis and temperature derating to meet military requirements.
- Designed LCOS, LCD, and plasma panel drive electronics.
- Wrote board and system level design requirement documents from system level requirements. Assisted with generation of acceptance procedures.
- Designed several PCBA’s in two hospital blood glucose monitoring systems. Boards included multiple switching power supplies with isolated low noise outputs, a CAN bus controller (Atmel AT90CAN), an LCD display with touch screen controller, a USB hub meeting medical isolation, creepage and clearance requirements, and a low noise multichannel biosensor amplifier with 24-bit ADC’s, DAC’s, and heater controller. Helped define documentation procedures to meet FDA requirements. Conducted EMI and EMC testing to assure compliance with international EMI and ESD standards.
- Designed 125 MHz data synchronizer to eliminate skew from incoming data using Xilinx Virtex-II FPGA.
- Designed controllers for high-speed high-resolution wide format inkjet printers using 68340 and 68360 processors, FPGA’s, optical sensors, and motor controllers.
- Designed two controllers for hospital ventilators using Cirrus 9315 and Intel 80186 processors.
- Designed UV curing system for wide format inkjet printer using 2 kilovolt 10-amp (peak) pulses. Also designed the EMI containment components and testing that passed MIL-STD-461/462 requirements.
- Responsible for training and support of engineers using FPGA and CPLD products from Xilinx and embedded communications controllers from Motorola as FAE.
- Developed code for low-level hardware drivers. Assist software developers with plotting algorithms for inkjet printers.
- Lead cross-company team to redesign portions of a medical ventilator for CISPR11/IEC601 EMI and international compliance.
- Designed controller and firmware for ground water monitoring system.
- Designed radiation monitoring “skids” for use in commercial nuclear power generating plants and control panel for nuclear submarines.
- Generated EMI/EMC design and testing procedures to meet MIL-STD-461 and NACSEM 5100, generated schedules, and conducted customer design reviews.
- Designed 68020-based CPU card using 68851, 68881, gate arrays, and other devices. Also designed 68000-based military computer terminal using memory manager, DMA controllers, and other peripherals.
