Senior Biotechnology Mechanical Engineer - Bay Area

We are seeking a Senior Biotechnology Mechanical Engineer. The primary part of the job will be leading and/or directly contributing to the mechanical aspects of a product’s design. We are seeking candidates with experience developing complex instrumentation that includes automated fluid handling, sample preparation, and sample delivery mechanisms as well as fluidic controls, motion controls, and thermal controls. Specific technical responsibilities vary by project; however, it is imperative that you have command of all mechanical engineering fundamentals and understand how they are applied to simple, reliable design.  You are also comfortable in client meetings, both in person and on conference calls.


  • Design of biotech instrumentation components and integration, including mechanical automation, fluidic, and thermal
  • Serve as technical lead for engineers working in Simplexity's other offices          
  • Design injection-molded parts, machined parts, and sheet metal parts in 3D CAD
  • Manage assemblies of components and bill of materials
  • Discover creative, yet easily manufacturable solutions to difficult problems
  • Lead brainstorms and design reviews with internal team and clients
  • Design and analyze mechanical systems and mechanisms
  • Coordinate with electrical team to communicate mechanical constraints
  • Coordinate with industrial design team to implement design intent
  • Create 2D drawings using correct GD&T standards and perform tolerance analyses
  • Identify appropriate prototyping methods for part evaluation and proper materials for production
  • Evaluate prototypes to test specifications and then improve upon the design
  • Management of technical issues and task prioritization
  • Create ISO-compliant design documentation and revision control


  • Bachelor’s of Science or Master’s of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or Biomechanical Engineering from an accredited four-year university (or similar)
  • 10+ years of experience, in mechatronics within the life science industry
  • Proficient knowledge of SolidWorks or PTC Creo Direct
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and design considerations – injection molding, sheet metal, machining, rapid prototyping
  • Experience in mid to high volume manufacturing of consumer and medical devices
  • Strong working knowledge of design control procedures and regulatory environment
  • Understanding of consumables and their interaction with instruments
  • Experience sharing mechanical information for PCBAs with electrical team
  • Experience implementing ID surface models into mechanical designs
  • Thorough understanding of GD&T and ISO/ANSI-compliant documentation practices and how they are applied to design and manufacturing
  • Excellent organization and analytical skills combined with attention to detail. Ability to prioritize and plan effectively
  • Highly motivated with demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to observe mechanical differences and capture details to solve defects as they occur
  • Experience with getting to the root cause of defects.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and write detailed reports
  • Have a positive attitude and focus on client success
  • Ethical and honest in every part of the job
  • Work effectively in a team setting and collaborate openly with other engineers
  • Proficiency with MS Suite tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)


  • Microfluidic experience is a big plus
  • Understanding of pumping and valving a plus
  • Finite Element Analysis, Computation Flow Dynamics, or experience in other simulation packages a plus
  • Spline driven surface modeling a plus
  • Top-down design techniques and master modeling a plus
  • Experience with Atlassian tools (Confluence, JIRA) a plus
  • Prior experience with medical devices and working within a medical quality system preferred
  • Robotics, and programming experience a plus
  • Knowledge of stepper and dc motors, solenoids, gear and belt drive systems, bearings, sensors, and electronics a plus
  • Knowledge of imaging systems is a plus
